Our Wider Offer

Music

At Shalford we are very excited to be able to offer individual instrumental lessons with Jessie Tabor. Jessie is a very experienced music teacher from Early Years up to adults and has led choirs and music groups in schools and within the local community. She performs regularly as a solo performer and in orchestras for local amateur dramatic clubs. Jessie offers lessons in piano, flute, alto saxophone and clarinet. Her pupils here at Shalford have made excellent progress and have performed regularly in assemblies. If you would like your child to start music lessons, please ask at the school office for more information.

Sport

The learning and teaching of Physical Education at Shalford Primary School aims to provide all children with the opportunity to be active, healthy and enjoy the benefits of physical activity and competitive sport. Through PE, skills and values such as strategy, respect, teamwork and fairness are built. We believe primary school experiences are pivotal to the children’s future perception of physical activity and the enthusiasm and enjoyment of the pupils at Shalford is testament to the passion and dedication of all staff. Pupils leave the school equipped to enjoy sport for all its health and social benefits. For those who relish the competitive element, they gain the skills, confidence and relevant experience to succeed at their chosen level and discipline.

Through their learning, children have the opportunity to:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities,
  • Be physically active for sustained periods of time,
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities,
  • Lead healthy, active lives.

We strive to develop children’s knowledge of a healthy body together with how physical activity contributes to a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Sport participation provides opportunities for children to develop intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically through a range of team, group and individual experiences and opportunities.

All children receive two PE lessons each week; one delivered by their class teacher and one delivered by specialised sports coaches from Sports Xtra. We work alongside the coaches to ensure a broad and balanced PE curriculum, covering outdoor games, athletics, dance and gymnastics.

In addition to our school based PE lessons, each child from Years 1-6 are offered an annual block of swimming lessons at Braintree Swimming Centre which is part funded through our Sports Premium Grant.
